The Top Ten Airports in the World

The Top Ten Airports in the World
    Article by : Jeremie

Skytrax, a consultancy based in the UK, routinely reviews and ranks airports and airlines around the world by surveying international flyers. The aviating rating company in its 2022 review of the top 100 airports in the world pinpointed the domination of European and Asian airports. Apart from surveying airports, cabin staff, and airlines, Skytrax also conducts satisfaction surveys, flight inspections, and in-flight reviews.

Of the top 20 airports worldwide, 10 airports were in Asia and the remaining 10 were in Europe. Surprisingly not a single US airport figured in the top 20 list. In this blog, we take a look at some of the best airports in the world according to Skytrax.

    Tokyo Haneda International Airport, Japan

Tokyo International Airport, better known as Haneda Airport was rated as the world’s 2nd best airport. Haneda airport is busier compared to the other international airport serving Tokyo-Narita Airport, and also closer to the city center. The airport bagged a host of other Skytrax awards in 2022 including ‘Asia’s best airport’, ‘best domestic airport in the world’ and ‘world’s cleanest airport.

    Changi International Airport, Singapore

Singapore’s Changi Airport occupied the top spot in the list of the world’s best airports in 2021 but slid to 3rd spot in 2022. The Changi Airport is the base of the world’s favorite air carriers Singapore Airlines, Silk Air, and Tiger Air. Nearly 63 million passengers flew in and out of Changi Airport in 2022 making the airport one of the busiest globally.

Singapore Changi Airport is best known for its ‘Jewel’ designed by Moshe Safdie, a universally acclaimed architect. The Jewel comprising a 14,000 sq. ft Canopy Park, cascades, and indoor forests, comes into view the moment you approach the airport.

    Hong Kong International Airport

Hong Kong International Airport once used to be one of the world’s busiest airports both in terms of passenger traffic and cargo movement. But the catastrophic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic caused the airport’s ranking to plunge 10 places from the 10th – to 20th position. Nevertheless, Hong Kong International Airport continues to be Hong Kong’s gateway serving as the hub for Hong Kong Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Cathay Dragon.

The airport functions as a strategic regional transit hub, enabling millions of passengers to reach cities in mainland China via connecting flights.

    Charles De Gaulle Airport, Paris

Charles De Gaulle Airport,    also called Paris CDG or Roissy Airport is France’s largest and principal international airport. CDG Paris is the main hub for Air France, the focus city for low-cost airlines Vueling and EasyJet, and an important destination for SkyTeam, OneWorld, and Star Alliance. Paris Charles De Gaulle was the busiest airport in the European Union, 2nd busiest airport in Europe, and the 9th busiest airport globally in 2019.

Skytrax designated CDG as Western Europe’s Best Airport as well as Europe’s best airport.

    Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Rambling across 4,700 acres with five parallel runways, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has continued to be the busiest airport worldwide by passenger traffic. However, Atlanta International Airport lost its pole position as the world’s busiest airport for a brief period in 2020 owing to COVID-19’s adverse effects.

The airport is the hub of Delta Airlines which flies more than 1000 planes daily to 225 overseas and domestic destinations.

    Dubai International Airport

Dubai International Airport hopped, skipped, and jumped five spots in 2022, claiming the 14th rank in the list of the world’s best airports. In terms of floor real estate, Terminal 3 is the world’s 2nd largest airport building with an area of 18.4 million square feet. One of the strategic gateways of the United Arab Emirates, as well as a key cargo hub in the Middle East, Dubai International Airport, is the flagship airport for Emirates.

The airport is also home to one of the largest duty-free shopping centers in the world

    Beijing Capital International Airport

Two international airports serve Beijing, Beijing Daxing International Airport and the Beijing Capital International Airport. The Beijing Capital International Airport has greatly improved its ranking as one of the busiest airports in the world within a few years. PEK (the IATA code for the airport) handled the 2nd highest number of passengers for 12 consecutive years (from 2010-2021). From and onwards 2009, Beijing Capital International Airport topped the list of busiest Asian airports both in terms of cargo movement and passenger traffic.

Beijing international airport is a focus city for Shandong Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, and Sichuan Airlines, and the major hub for Hainan Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, and Air China. A mindboggling 100,013, 642 passengers passed through the airport in 2019.

    Heathrow Airport, London

Six international airports serve the British capital London of which Heathrow Airport is the busiest and largest in the UK. Heathrow Airport was ranked the 8th busiest airport in the world in 2021 but could not make it to the top 10 list in 2022. Serving as London’s chief international entryway, Heathrow is the major airport hub for British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

Additionally, terminal number 5 of Heathrow was alleged to be the most excellent airport terminal on a worldwide basis.

    Los Angeles International Airport

The Los Angeles International Airport, popularly known by its airport code LAX is one of the busiest US airports that handled over 87 million flyers in 2019. Of late LAX has been at the epicenter of a massive structural overhaul and makeover, thereby enhancing the airport’s popularity. An electric rail network expected to be operational in late 2023 will go a long way in resolving the airdrome’s traffic problems.

LAX is also going to add several restaurants, seafood-and fast-food joints that’ll whet the appetites of domestic and international passengers. Spread across 1400 hectares of land, LAX was the US’s 2nd-busiest airport and the world’s 3rd busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic.

    Hamad International Airport, Doha, Qatar

Serving Qatar’s capital Doha and the hub for Qatar Airways, Hamad International Airport is the world’s most structurally beautiful and luxurious airport. Constructed at a whopping cost of $ 16 billion, Hamad Airport sprawls across 5400 acres of land. The airport boasts a host of modern-day amenities including an indoor swimming pool, squash courts, fitness center, and an upscale hotel.

Aviation rating firm, Skytrax ranked Hamad International Airport as the world’s best airport in 2021, unseating Singapore’s Changi Airport, and held onto the title in 2022.
